You could go out and buy a Sun 3/50 - the used ones are running around $600-$700
range!

I am trying to avoid any kind of war, this comp.sys.atari.st news is
not for these types of postings.  SOOOO after this posting please

MFLOPS is a better measure than MIPS, the 68040 25 does about 3.5 MFLOPS,
the i486-25 with Weitek 4167 does 10+ MFLOPS and the ranges of MIPS for
the 486-25 is from 11 to 15 MIPS.

I know the A3000 is a non flicker machine, but machines upto it isn't
without the flicker fixer.  I use to be an AMIGA crazy person so
I know the kind of things that AMIGA can do, but it is not that great
it pushed me back to using the ST.

        I'm curious how the 8bit emulator for the Atari Ste/TT
        systems works...  like, how can you get the programs from
        the 8bit to the STe/TT to begin with?
        Do you need a 5 1/4" Disk drive for the STe/TT?

        I'm considering buying a Mega STe/TT030, and then transfering my progams
        from my 130xe to the Mega..

        I also have heard that a C=64/128 emulator is out for the STe/TT.
        Is this True?

        Also, how does the IBM 386 Emulator work?
        What percent compatable is it?
        Can it do VGA/Super VGA graphics?

        Does anyone out there have experience with this?
        I appreciate any help, as it will help me decide on the STe.

Subject: Hard-Disk Construction Summary Request

        I am thinking again about building a hard drive for my ST.  I have
        an ancient 10 MB Supradrive in a shoe box case.  I was thinking
        about reusing the case & power supply & tossing a new drive in there.

        Can some kind people please send me infomation about any/all of the
        following questions:

        (1) What host adapters are available, where can I get them, how much
            do they cost, what are the differences?
        (2) What drives do people recommend?  Where is a good source to
            purchase drives?
        (3) Where can I get the specification of the data output by the
            DMA port (what people refer to as ASCI I think)?
        (4) What kind of software would I need to write/obtain to make this
            work"?

        Any information would be greatly helpful.  Is there a "Frequently
        Asked Questions" kind of wqrite up about building hard drives for the
        ST?

in the market for one and I'm interested in what is being used out there.
Whats good, bad? Why?

For example, is the Supra any good? Is it slow/fast/noisy?

    With the new generation of STs coming out, the old Mega is sort of
like the old maid, all dressed up and no where to go.  It is going through
the same stage as what the Mac II went through only a year ago.  It was
being replaced by sleaker, faster, and more versatile machines.
    Recently, new daughter boards have been made available for the Mac II's,
making it just as fast, if not faster, than the Mac FX for a far cheaper
price.
    Ok, the first generation Megas have the potential of a resurrection,
just as the Mac II.  Dave Small's SST, a 33 mhz real burster and memory
expander, will first be introduced for the old generation Mega ST.  Holding
on to this platform, rather than selling it, could really net a person a
blinding fast cruncher with 12 meg of memory.
    If I still wanted to sell it, I would really sell it mentioning the
SST's need for it. The price would have to be about half of what it was
bought for, expecially with more electronically powerful, though slotless,
1040STe's going for $400.00 and less.

My problem is, that every time I try to work with any comm.-soft in PC-mode
my system just looks up.

Does someone  know how i can print my postscipt files??
The files are created with spectre 3.0.
I want to print them on a laserwriter III printer with a postscript cardridge.
This printer is only usable using ethernet.
I have send my files to the printer but it has not print a thing yet...
The postscript files are OK.

I have a postscript previewer written by Hauke Hess, who has given me
permission to upload it to atari archive. It is based on the ghostscript
epson driver, so it is a little large and a little slow. Other than that,
it is quite nice. You can specify the resolution of the image and then
scroll around it with the cursor keys. I hope to include something
like it in the GS 2.2 (already released) or 2.3 (soon to be released)
port to the ST. The program is called gsprev, and I will send it to
atari.archive as soon as I get some time.

Subject: Purchase of Software from the UK.

 Ho folks. Some one responded that US users should have no problems with
 software purchased from the UK. I can state that for some games programs
 at least this is not true. In a recent ST mag there was a letter from a US
 serviceman stationed in the UK who had brought his ST over with him.
 He had purchased some games locally and they would not run on his ST. I think
 this is to prevent US folks buying cheaper in the UK. He should also note
 that as with IBM PC's etc. the atari US keyboard has one key less that
 the international keyboards.

 I suppose the moral is to ask before you buy or specify on the order for use
 on a machine with a US TOS.

        A couple of weeks ago in ZNET, a file called SUNMOON.LZH was listed.
Unfortunately I only remember the name, but I believe it is like the DEC
desktop program which displays a sun or moon depending on time of day. I
thought it would be on the net at atari.archive, but I haven't seen it. To
save myself a call to GEnie, does anyone have it?

We've been asked that before...  We will perhaps release source code for some
of the stuff, but we really aren't sure about it.

As for neat tricks, some of it is voodoo programming, and I'm sure Atari will
appreciate if we don't go spreading voodoo programming techniques.  Altho, you
can always ask us when you are intrigued.

OK, I downloaded uw.uue, uwbin.uue and uw.tar.Z. I built the server
end of the program for my SUN using uw.tar.Z. How do I run the client
end of the software?? If I run uw.prg I get two bombs, if I run win.prg
I get a GEM screen of no practical use. What am I doing wrong. By the
way I have a 1040st running tos1.4. Thanks in advance.

ARC:
Fast, reliable and effective. Since version 6.02 arc can archive complete
directories. Unfortunately it cannot store/extract dedicated files from a
directory :-(.

ZOO:
Not as fast as arc but very reliable. The most flexible archiving system.
You can put several versions of a file into an archive, associate comments
with archive elements and much more. Reading the zoo manual is really
worthwhile! Zoo archives need some more space than others. My favorite
archiver for larger distributions with nested directories. I also use it to
backup my program development directories because I can store several
versions of the source files.

LHARC:
Slow and unreliable. It has become popular because it has the best
compression factor. However, archiving and extracting is really slow. There
are several not always compatible LHarc versions by different authors
floating around. So if you don't have the right LHarc you might not be able
to extract an archive at all. Just say NO.
